Color is one of the design elements that bring a place to live and get recognized.  However, the identity of a place cannot be made from design. The accent of a place is given by the geography, climate and the people.

 

Furano in Hokkaido Japan is a good example, where the vernacular life of farming creates a richness and diversity of agricultural activities. The planting in return creates a local identity well know to everyone over the world.
