The planning of the Forbidden City in Beijing was based on a north south axial relationship with a hierarchy of palaces and spaces.  The main frames of all palaces are built of wood.

 

The wooden beams and columns form the most important elements.  The columns define spaces and corridors.  They also form a sun path, reminding us the time of a day.
